“Color, animals, nature, old films, science fiction, dreams and vivid imagination inspire me. I like to create snapshots from dreams and other worlds in my work, leaving the viewer to reflect upon their own dreams, imagination and experiences to gather their own meaning from the illustrations.
This piece was made using handmade cut and paste collage, as are nearly all of my works. First I select images that appeal to me, whether I have a theme in mind or not. I usually go with my instinct rather than trying to force an idea as I prefer to work in an organic way and I feel this reflects in my work.
It was inspired by the sense of wonder and adventure you have as a child. You would make a tent in your front room, garden, anywhere you could, and sometimes pretend you were off in a far away land getting ready for the exciting world, or you would go out into the real world and pretend you were somewhere different and exciting with made up creatures and things to do. Part of my reason for doing this, and many other of my pieces, is that I don’t want to ever lose that sense of wonderment and imagination, and I want to hopefully inspire people to get away from the real world for a while and surrender to the inventive and adventurous world most of us forget about as we grow up. ” -Laura Redburn / cardboardcities.
